Usually associated with the left of center Don Cherry, the pocket trumpet is in hard bop heaven in the hands of Ginetta Vendetta as she leads a swinging team with Danny Walsh/ts, Jon Davis/p, Eric Halvorson/dr and Belden Bullock/b. Her tone is a cross between Chet Baker lyricism and Lee Morgan brightness, wonderfully hip as she teams with the muscular Walsh as they ride over the rhythm of “All Choke & No Slide” and give totally hip read to the Latin grooved bopper “My Little Blue Suede Shoes”. Her muted horn is gorgeous on a suave “Come Rain Or Come Shine” and the horns sizzle on the minor blues “African Queen”. A big surprise is her Peggy Lee-toned voice as she coos and wails through a seductive “Fever” and goes lounge lizard on “Black Coffee” while agonize on horn during “Angel Eyes”. Get this lady to LA!!!
