Pianist Elliot Galvin gives a solo recital in Paris for a 2018 concert, showing clever improvisation skills and confidence in his intuition. All of the songs are originals, with a post modern feel with bop roots on the explorative “As Above You” which displays a strong touch and affinity for lower keys, while he prances with Monkian delight on the upbeat “So Below.” Lyrical and dainty lullaby motifs abound on the tender “Broken Windows” and a mix of baroque and bebop coalesce on the creative “For J.S.” Galvin uses space well on the Diabelli variations-sounding “Coda” while he gets a bit experimental with paper on the piano strings for the high pitched “Time and Everything”. Never lost in the woods, and the trails are worth taking.
