Billy Eckstine: If She Walked Into My Life

This reissue of a 1974 album finds the legendary Billy Eckstine trying to find traction in a long career. Caught in a time that was the nadir of jazz vocals (not even Tony Bennett could find a label!), Eckstine turned to Stax Records to mix a bit of pop and soul together.  His voice is in rich form, with a bel canto read of a dramatic “Sophisticated Lady” a show stopper. But Eckstine is caught between worlds, going Nashville with choir on a made-for-Elvis “Loving Arms” and sounding like he’s in Las Vegas for the big sounding “I Am Yours”. Lots of strings, oboes and even glockenspiel for pieces like Stevie Wonder’s “All In Love Is Fair” and the pop “Maybe This Time”. Eckstine eventually found his niche again, as this album chronicles the search.
