Pianist Tete Montoliu was a respected Spain-based artist, and although blind was a regular backup for the likes of Roland Kirk, Kenny Dorham, Dexter Gordon, Ben Webster, Lucky Thompson and Anthony Braxton. This 1988 session has him in the strong company of bassist Reggie Johnson and drummer Alvin Queen in Barcelona, and the team is swinging hard.
Montuliu’s fingers dance over the rapid fire of “ All The Things You Are” and charge like a stallion on “I Love You.” The team stretches out on “Oleo” with some nimble interplay between Johnson and Queen, with Johnson getting some snappy sounds on his spotlight of “What’s New.” The team digs in deep for “Old Folks/All Blues” and the hand is quicker than the eyes for Montuliu for the high speed of “Solar.”
