Joshua Redman and Brooklyn Rider: Sun on Sand

The juxtaposition of Joshua Redman’s trio of Scott Coley/b and Takeihi/dr works wondrously with the string quartet of Brooklyn Rider on this mix of chamber moods and extrapolations. Redman’s warm and breathy tone fits well here, dramatic on the Bartokian “Between Dog and Wolf” as well as with the classical romance with a dash of Bach on “Soft Focus”. Hints of Vaugh-Williams sweeping landscapes team with Takeishi’s galloping drums on the thrilling “Through Mist” and other aspects of the group are developed as Colley gives an intro to an initially abstract title track that eventually glides into a bluesy groove. Through it all, Redman is bel canto, with rich hues as on “Starbursts and Haloes” and feels in his skin in the intriguing and challenging environment.
