At first, you have to wonder why Tony DeSare would have someone else besides himself accompany his warm and Rat Packy voice on piano. But his childhood friend Tedd Firth is at the piano (and organ) throughout on these intimate duets, and it works well. Firth has a rich and Bill Evansy-styled piano, so this session feels like the classic Bennett-Evans summit meetings from the seventies, with Firth giving some rich and flowing intros to open the door for DeSare. Firth bricks tremelos to anthoughtful “Spring Is Hear” and hands a tender torch to DeSare as the singer gives a warm vibrato intro to “Over The Rainbow.” Firth on organ is reflective on Tom Waits’ “Sand Diego Serenade” and DeSare’s own “I’ll Get You Through The Night” both are assuring and comforting. DeSare is a vocalist that deserves a higher profile, and his long time friend might deliver the launching pad.
