Leader Alex Lore plays alto and soprano saxes, bringing together pianist Glenn Zeleski, drummer Allan Mednard and bassist Desmond White for post bopping themes dedicated to and inspired by classical composers ranging from Bach to Ives and Stravinsky. Legendary tenor saxist George Garzone joins in for a couple tracks, creating a wonderfull texture on the driving “Vanishing Act (for Maddalena Casulana” with some wonderful interplay between Lore and White, while “Eastman (for Julius Eastman” is a thoughtful contemplation. The team gets artsy with Lore on soprano on the classy take of “Light” and they are frisky for “Casey Jones (For Charles Ives).” Zaleski gives hints of Satie on “Color Sheel (For Alexander Scriabin)” and the team is elliptical for “Karol (For Karol Szymanowski)”. Clever, sophisticated and filled with long sepia shadows.
