Big Star: In Space

Alex Chilton’s time with his band Big Star is chronicled here in this reissue of In Space that includes a bunch of bonus tracks to boot. The 70s band had Chilton with Jon Auer/v-g, Ken Stringfellow/b-key-voc and Jody Stephens/dr-voc as well as guest horn players Jim Spake/sax and Noke Taylor/ct on a few tracks. The band as a unit had moments where they sounded like The Byrds as on the rockisn “Dony” and even used Beach Boys hooks during the clever singalong of “Turn My Back on The Sun.” The team always had a pop feel, upbeat on “Best Chance” and artsy on “Lady Sweet.” The bonus tracks include sketches of “Lady Sweet” and a clever a cappella take of “Turn My Back on The Sun.” The sounds have aged fairly well over the decades, and even though Chilton has moved on, this disc shows a fertile period in his career.
