Tenor saxist Noah Preminger has tackled a lot of projects, but this one, a 48 minute opus, may be his most ambitious yet. He teams up with Jason Palmer/tp, John O’Gallagher/as, Kris Davis/p, Rob Schwimmer/clav, Kim Cass/b and Rudy Royston/dr for the opus.
There are hints off classical sounds with Schwimmer on the continuum, but most of the time the clavinet makes it a funk fest with frenetic moods and thrilling mood swings. Palmer gets some light to shine on a spacy interlude with some space cadet noodlings, and shrills together with O’Gallagher on the aggressive hard bop segue. Preminger gets frenzied at times, lyrical and dark-mooded the next and reaching for Neptune the next. If this has a score to it, there must be a LOT of black ink!!!
