I’ve never heard of Jim James’ work with his regular band My Morning Jacket, so I have nothing to compare this album of his in front of the Louisville Orchestra (led by Teddy Abrams) with. What I can tell you is that the earnest quality of James’ voice with the sweeping orchestra support is quite impressive, with chorus on “Here In Spirit” or with a doo wopping synth and bolero strings on “Back To The End Of The World.” The messages include poetic warnings and prophetic dramas as on “In Demand” or the meaning of our role on earth (“The Human Touch”) and his Greg Lakeish voice is rich and mature, sounding reflective on “Who Am I?”. Reminiscent of the halcyon days of progressive rock with Yes and ELP where similar questions were asked, and we’re still looking for answers under the sun.
