If good vibes could save the world, then this album might be the prescription. Vernon “Ice” Black/g, Tony Saunders/b and Sylvester Burks/p-key lead a team with Austin White/dr, Jeff Ryan/sax and Gail Johnson/key on an upbeat and funky collection of originals. A mix between smooth and soul permeates pieces like the CTI-flavored “Siz” with some hip tenor sax work as well as the synthy “Verano Dias” that mixes acoustic guitar with rich alto sax. Funky keyboards bounce on “Gumbo Groove” and are sleek as they link up with Saunders’ bass on “One More Time.” Pretty horizons on “Just Before Sunset” and a grooving “My Mellow Ways” keep things optimistic. Take two, and call me in the morning!
