Maciej Obara Quartet: Three Crowns

Dark toned alto saxist Maciej Obara leads a post bop team of Dominik Wania/p, Ole Morten Vagan/b and Gard Nilssen/dr through a series of dreamy originals. The moods have an icy mist to them, as Vagan bows and picks through the brooding “Mr. S,” Wanias ectomorphic chiming gets elliptical with Obara’s eerie haze on “Glow” and the leader mourns on “Three Pieces In Old Style (Pt 1)”. Vagan keeps things tied together on the loose “Little Requiem For A Polish Girl ‘Tranquillo’” that is a solemn affair led in by Wania’s liturgical piano. Songs of a late fall sunset in Northern Europe.
