Pianist/composer Fima Chupakhin leads a post bop team of Sergey Avanesov/ts, Josh Evans/tp, Yoav Eshed/g, James Robbins/b and jonathan Barber/dr through a mix of originals and bop classics. Vuyo Sotashe brings her voice to meld with the leader on a gorgeous read of the hymn “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” while her take of the title track is a delicate and fragile affair. With Chupakhin on Rhodes, the team gives a soulful read of John Coltrane’s “Moment’s Notice” while a piano trio take of Thelonious Monk’s “Off Minor” is a fun bopping affair. Esheds guitar is soft on “Winter Sun is Deceiving” and Evans’ horn gives gentle hues on the rich “Dedication to Rey.” Calm waters.
