THE VOICE OF A WOMAN…La Tanya Hall: Say Yes

Husky voiced La Tanya Hall teams with pianist Andy Milne’s band of John Hebert/p and Clarence Penn/dr for some sophisticated reads of jazz standards. Guest trumpeter Michael Leonhart brings a Miles Davis mute to Penn’s Poinciana pulse of “All You Need To Say” with the horn bookending the album getting dramatic with Ms. Hall on a thoughtful “Fiddle And The Drum.” She sings out like she’s speaking to you on ‘”Ev’ry Time We Say Goodby” and is dreamy with Milne on “Pensative.” A take of “Whisper Not” is ebony dark and her duet with Hebert on “Softly As A  Morning Sunrise” is a sensuous duet. She shows here bop chops as she elbows out sharp angles no “Jitterbug Waltz” and holds her own with Penn on a kinetic “Well You Needn’t”. Music for grown ups.
