Janiva Magness takes on the formidable task of taking on the songbook of Creedence Clearwater Revival star John Fogerty and giving them a personal stamp. She’s got the right voice for it; strong, confident and with just enough grit as she teams up with Gary Davenport/b, Steve Wilson/dr, Zachary Ross-Dave Darling/g, Arlan Oscar/key for the twelve tunes of CCR and beyond.
Magness is able to stomp of two steppers like the title track as well as the Delta serenade with Ross’ dobro on “Blueboy.” The team gives a folksy lilt to “Lookin’ Out My Back Door” and sounds like a revamped Rolling Stones on “Bad Moon Rising.” Taj Mahal brings voice and rural banjo to “Don’t You Wish It Was True” while Sam Morrow guests on vocals with rich supply by Oscar on a big sounding “Lodi.” A good production from Cosmo’s factory
