Samuel Blaser Quartet: As The Sea

Trombonist/composer Samuel Blaser leads a quartet with Marc Ducret/g, Banz Oester/b and Gerald Cleaver/dr through a four piece suite of free form sounds that reflect the sea, and in these hands the waters get pretty rough. Aggressive percussion, distorted guitar and cacophonous tidal waves of sound create white caps on “Part 1” while it seems the rudder came off the ship on the hard bop going shipwrecked on “Part 2”. Machine gun like guitars and drums sound like a storm at sea on “Part 4” while a dirgelike trombone sounds like an agonizing beached whale on “Part 3.” Lots of storms to navigate through, and I think the compass must have been missing.
