Mareike Wiening: Metropolis Paradise

Drummer Mareike Wiening leads a richly lyrical post bop team of Rich Perry/ts, Den Tepfer/p, Alex Goodman/g and Johannes Felscher/dr through eight impressively wide-ranging originals. She shows taste and style on the brushes as she supports Perry’s gently yearning tenor on “Free Time” and the graceful nocturne of the title track while interlocking with Fletcher and finally letting him go solo on the tender “Viewpoints.” She asserts her sticks and sets the stage for Tepfer’s pretty piano on the hip “2 In 1” and shapes everyone to attention on the crisp “and quirky “Misconception” that has Goodman creating some sharp angles with his #2 pencil of a guitar tone. Goodman is whimsical as Wiening guides through an opening lullabye on “For A Good Day” that stretches out into a fun affair while the closing “Free At Last” has the sticks take a graceful cadence to Perry’s sighing sax. Rich melodies and thoughtful directions.
