Trombonist JC Sanford leads a modern sounding post bop team of Zacc Harris/g, Chris Bates/b and JT Bates/dr-perc through some wide ranging sounds. Even an arrangement of the standard “All The Things You Are” is stretched out almost beyond recognition, with elliptical brushes and ‘bone. Sanford’s horn gets into deep magma on the dark rocker of a title track and the edges are jagged for the edgy “Selfish Shellfish.” The team shows it can bop with precision on the snappy “JT Rex” while fuzzy guitar from Harris takes on a languid “Zaccfarben.” Bates is hippity hopping for “Bates Brothers Boy Bande” and the get in get pastoral with bass bowed and guitar graceful on ”Umm, Yeah.” Abstract strokes.
