Finnish born guitarist Olli Hirvonen mixes up sounds with his quartet of Luke Marantz/p, Mary Kenney /b and Nathan Ellman-Bell/dr with sounds ranging to gentle folk to rock, all linked by jazz sensibilities. Plugged in, Hirvonen hits hard on the rapid run on the dark toned “No Light” and a line from The Beatles’ “She’s So Heavy” is injected into “Nondescript” before Marantz takes over. Bell brings in a Rush-like beat to the title track, with his brushes keeping the bop in place for “Size Constancy.” On the acoustic side, “Unravel” is a lovely etude with Hirvonen and Kenney creating pastoral mists. Bringing in some vintage rock to the earth of improv.
