Drummer Andrew Munsey paints with a dark brush while leading a quintet with Ochion Jewell/ts, Steph Richards/tp-fh, Amino Belyamini/p-key and Sam Minaie/b. Munsey locks in well with Minaie as they pulsate on “Schema” and build up to a dramatic climax with Jewell on “Skyline.” Drums rumple as the horns give pops and fluffs for ‘Driftwood” while Richards’ muted horn floats along Belyamini’s soulful and spacious keys as Minaie leads on “Petite Feast.” Dark hues create long shadows on “Seedling” and the gentle tones hover with Munsey in a dainty mood on the rich ballad “Requite.” A collection of pastiches coaxed along with style by the leader with a map.
