John Yao’s Triceratops: How We Do

Trombonist John Yao leads a loose fitting quintet that flexes between Ornette Coleman and Art Blakey. The team of Billy Drewes/ss-as, Jon Irabagon/ts, Peter brendler/b and Mark Ferber weave inside and outside with Yao as they slither around on the freebopping “Three Parts As One” or swing hard for “Two Sides.” Yao veers with Drews on the hip “Triceratops Blues” with Brendler getting moody as he shuffles with Ferber on “How We Do.” Drewes’ soprano is sweet on “The Golden Hour” and Ferber supplies a nice backbeat as the horns call and respond to Irabogon’s “Tea For T.” Rich grooves in and out of the pocket.
