Miguel Zenon: Sonero-the Music of Ismael Rivera

Alto saxist Miguel Zenon continues his journey of bringing music of his heritage into the modern jazz lore by exploring the music of famed Afro-Puerto Rican singer Ismael Rivera (1937-1987). Zenon approaches material made famous by “El Sonero Mayor” and with Luis Perdomo/p, Hans Glawischnig/b and Henry Cole/dr brings out fervent colors that “The Greatest Singer-Improvisor” would approve of.

After a brief introduction, the quartet gives a rapid and peppy “Quitate de La Via, Perico” and a bright “Las Tumbas” that features warm piano work by Perdomo. A three legged race of bass, alto and piano makes for a wonderful “Traiga Salsa” while Zenon and  Perdomo foray into a pas de deux during the dance of “El Negro Bembon.” All throughout the album, Zenon is at his most bel canto, sublime on the hip “ Si Te Contara” and reflective on “ Hola.” Rivera’s imbedded melodicism is passed on and caught during this winning collection.
