UVA Percussion Ensemble: Speed Of Sound

Directed by I-Jen Fang, the University of Virginia, 200 years young idea of Thomas Jefferson, brings together a seven piece percussion “orchestra” to perform a collection of creative modern pieces. The instruments include vibes, marimba, timpani, glockenspiel, snare and other things that go bump in the night. The material actually keeps ones attention, with some snappy shares on ”Khamsa,” Bartokian triangle for “Choose,” Chiming vibes and marimba of “Rite of the Elves,” a Javanesque wood block of “To Live and Be Free” and a clever useage of space as a sound on the paradiddle and drum rolling “Maxwell Tfirm.” Poems are read along rustling and throbbing support for “Two PFR-3 Poems by Jackson Mac Low” while sounds of rippling water  brings you to running to grab a jacket for “ Speed of Sound In An Ice Rain. Creative and original.
