Nick Grondin plays a rich modern guitar and even sings a bit with a cut and paste team of Jon Cowherd-Michel Reis/p, Brian Friedland/keys, Tucker Antell/sax, Lee Fish/dr, Brad Barrett-Dan Carpel/b, Vivk Patel/tp-fh and vocalist Aubrey Johnson. The moods created are a mix of warm panoramas and soulful excursions. Of the former, Antell’s tenor sax joins with dreamy voices for a gentle “Ships Passing” and also for a celestial “Secret Song” that also features Grondin’s sensitive guitar work. A take of Jimi Hendrixes “Little Wing” is given an R&B flavor while sensitive piano and bass surround Grondin as he delivers a sensitive version of U2’s “I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For.” Soft shadows are created by Patel’s horn for Grondin’s effects during the cascading “Softline” while pastel brass and guitar affects echo to Antell’s soprano sax for “So Close So Far.” Orange embers burning on the fire.
