Blue Moon Marquee: Bare Knuckles & Brawn

A throwback to the small band swing days of Louis Prima and Keely Smith are presented by raspy toned vocalist AW Cardinal on guitar and Jasmine Colette who adds voice to her slapped bass. Along with Darc  Phillips/p-B3, Jerry Cook/reeds, Jimmy Badger/dr, Jack Garton/tp and guest guitarist Paul Pigat songs ranging from bluesy calypsos like “Big Black Mama” or the swinging 50s “Smoke Rings For My Rider” feature smoky saxes vying with Cardinal’s growling lyrics over an incessant groove. Bass and guitar sway to Garton’s trumpet on the noir-ish “Hard Times Hit Parade” and the rhythm team is tighter than Beyonce’s skirt on the two stepping stop starter “Fever Flickering Flame.” The band is gritty for “Big Smoke” and Colette sears over Badger’s shuffling beat as she belts out “52nd Street Strut.” The two cool off as they show a more tender side as they close on “Lost and Wild,” but don’t let that fool you; this pair needs a leash and collar!
