Hyuna  Park Trio: Her Morning Waltz

Pianist and composer Hyuna Park leads a flexible trio with bassist Myles Sloniker and drummer Peter Traunmueller through a collection of originals and cleverly arranged standards. Of the latter, she struts out through a confident and chiming read of Gershwin’s “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and with some dainty cymbal support she delicately dances through Jobim’s “The Boy From Ipanema.” Her own material ranges from a wonderfully melodic journey on “Grandpa’s Clock” to a changing of paces as she digs in and then takes a breath on the assertive “The Stars Fell On Seoul” Bass and drums dance and leap on “Flight of Migrants” and Park shows her Bud Powell bebop chops on the snappy and hectic “Driving In New York.” Her warm touch and inherent lyricism is well displayed on her solo closer, the reflective “Outro” which has her revealed as excellent on her own as well as a team player. Any trips to LA coming up?
