Trumpet master Alex Sipiagin brings together a strong post bop team of Chris Potter/ts, Will Vinson/as, John Escreet/p-key, Matt Brewer/b, Eric Harland/dr and vocalist Alina Engibaryan for ten rich and creative originals. The inclusion of Engibaryan is a wise one, having her add artsy poetry to the keyboard laden “For You,” dreamy to the soft “Recovery” and soulful on the indie-toned “Between AM’s.” The three horns range from weaving in and out as they push and pull on the frantic “Rush” or urgently driving during “Savoir.” Harland creates a herky jerky mood to the elegiac “Sky 1” and synthy late period Miles Davis environments to the murky “ Start Of…” The title track has a deep blues pulse, with Potter and Sipiagin in creative form, while the entire team stretches out with Engibaryan on the elastic “Shadows,” coaxed along by Brewer’s thoughtful cadence. Wide ranging colors on the oil painted palate.
