Michael O’Neill Quintet with Tony Lindsay: Pacific Standard Time

Michael O’Neill plays tenor sax, bass clarinet, clarinet and flute as he leads a swinging bop team of horn men Erik Jekabson & Mike Olmos along with pianist John R. Burr, bassit, Dan Feiszli, drummer Alan Hall, percussionist Omar Ledezma and featuring the warm soulful voice of Tony Lindsay on this upbeat session.

Lindsay’s voice and inflection hearkens to the flexibility and joyful tone of Al Jarreau, displayed well on the Latinized “Just Friends” and salsa-flavored “Fragile.” Lindsay shows rich restraint with Burr with the horns pulling forward on a creative “Summertime” and the whole team is nimble as they bounce under Lindsay’s nimble wordings on a festive take of Thelonious Monk’s “Rhythm-A-Ning.” O’Neill for his parts sighs well on “You Don’t Know What Love Is” and gives a foggy hue to “Come Rain Or Come Shine.” Fresh and warm like early morning croissants.
