Chris Stamey and the Modrec Orchestra: New Songs For the 20th Century

Composer Chris Stamey shows his wares by bringing a wide range of vocalists and jazz musicians together on this warm and personal album. Singers including Nnenna Freelon, Caitlin Cary, Kirsten Lambert, Django Haskins and Millie McGuire are accompanied by John Brown/b, Will Campbell/sax, Bill Frisell/g, Stephen Anderson/p, Branford Marsalis/sax and Nels Cline/g for starters. Warm blues by Haskins teamed with Marsalis deliver a pretty “Manhattan Melody” and McGuire sounds Indie with Laua Thomas’ violin on “Pretty Butterfly.” A tribute to Charles Mingus on “”Beneath the Underdog” has a hand clapping R&B feel with Matt Douglas’ tenor sax and Marshall Crenshaw giving the gospel message. Left Bank accordion joins with Presyce Baez on” Occasional Shivers” and Brett Harris is an Old World hue for “On The Street Where We Used to Live.” Artsy and craftsy.
