David Sanchez: Carib

Blessed with one of the warmest tones on the tenor sax, David Sanchez utakes full advantage of his voice as he’s supported by a strong team of Lage Lund/g, Luis  Perdomo/p-key, Ricky Rodriguez/b, Obed Calvaire/dr, Jhan Lee Aponte, pec and Markus Schwartz/perc on this warm and balmy collection of Caribbean originals.

The team is upbeat and artsy as Lund and Sanchez lead the way on th driving “Morning Mist” and the two are spacious on the concise and impressionistic “Prelude to Canto” before the percolating percussion leads to a soft bed of ripples. Tribal and folksy moods are delivered on the mysterious “Wave Under Silk” and “Fernando’s Theme” is filled with traditional and earthy pulsations. Sanchez’s horn gracefully holds back on the driving “Iwa” and the richly percussive “A Thousand Yesterdays” with the tensile of the push-pull a sweet and sour joy. Subtle and yet filled with strength.
