Tine Bruhn & Johnny O’Neal: Nearness

If you want your jazz vocals relaxed and intimate, Tine Bruhn’s gonna be your  lady. She’s got a breathy and chesty mezzo soprano voice, and is not in a rush to deliver a lyric. Here, she teams up with pianist Johnny O’Neal for a Decalogue of standards that linger long after the song. She takes material like “Easy To Love” and “All of You” and reaches lower subtones as well as conversational dynamics with the ease of a trapeze artist. O’Neal is subtle and deferential in his support, adding dashes of phrases and ruminations at just the right time. A handful of the material includes the warm tenor of Stacy Dillard, who duets well with Bruhn on the intro to “But Beautiful.” Completely unassuming, yet drawing you into her world.
