Various Classic Jazz Artists: Putumayo Presents Jazz

I just love these kinds of discs: unassuming introductions to jazz for the uninitiated which feature alluring sounds that will get you hooked in no time. The emphasis here is on singers, but the few instrumentals are nothing to be ashamed of. Nothing too long, a nice intro, great and concise solos, and get out while the getting is good; Zoot Sims’ tenor on “Someone To Watch Over Me” should be bronzed, while Cannonball Adderley and Bill Evans produce a “Waltz For Debby” that will make your spine re-align. As for the singers, it’s just impossible to beat Nat King Cole on “”Deed I Do,” but Maxine Sullivan sure gives it a try on a riveting “’Taint No Use.” Baker’s take of “There Will Never Be Another You” and Mose Allison’s “Don’t Get Around Much Anymore” show how hip it is to be hep. This kind of stuff will just spoil you rotten!
