Bassist/composer Yuriy Galkin teams up with David Binney/as, Matt Mitchell/p-key and Rudy Royston/dr for a melodic tapestry of moods and atmospheres. Usually on the bright and left side of things, Binney is richly restrained, creating sublime tones on lyrical pieces such as the pulsating post bopper “Revival,” the thematic “Further Eruptions” and the glowing “Cradle Song.” Galkin bows along with water sounds to “Eauilibrium” and picks out a rich tone for “Rise and Fall..And Rise Again.” Mitchell is impressionistic for his solo “Expostion en Niveaux De Gris” and Royston is subtle in his coaxing, as on the pretty “Shifting Sands.” Galkin speaks some poetry on one of the versions of the title track, while the other take, a reprise, closes the album out like an ebbing tide. Impressively understated.
