Lead by the earthy Southern soul’d voice of Tierinii Jackson and pulsated by her sister Tikyra, the band Southern Avenue brings in Old School R&B reminiscent of the sweaty STAX days. The Booker T-like keyboards of Jeremy Powell don’t hurt either, with the horns and voice swamping up the room on “Keep On” and with extra wacka wooka guitars on “Whiskey Love.” Tieriniii’s voice gets blue on the murkey “Savior” and the band stomps as she pleads on “The Tea I Sip.” Some funky AWB-ish grooves are spun for “Switchup” and “Jive” with a trip to the church for a gospel’d “Lucky” teamed with a Sunday morning chorus. The team creates a low ceiling juke joint jive atmosphere, and you can feel the dirt under the nails. It plays in the South, how about So Cal?
