Rich, thoughtful and modern ideas, moods and contemplations are served up by composer and guitarist Alex Sill. He mixes and matches with a team of Otmaro Ruiz-Dave Grusin-Vardan Ovsepian/p, Gene Coye/dr, Danny Janklow-Jacob Scesney/reeds, Benjamin J. Shepherd/b and Mike Cottone/tp for sounds that evoke mental images of things past and future. A dedication to Jackie Kennedy-Onassis (“Jackie”) is a gentle pastoral affair with Sill on lovely acoustic guitar teamed with Grusin, whle sill Gels electric and bringin in Cottone for a warm “The Ballad of James Dean.” Scensney’s clarinet is autumnal with Gurisin and Sill for “Gaucho’s Theme” and Janklow’s alto is glowing for “Chapparal.” An intriguing three part “To A Theatre Near You” is an ambitious affair, with Sill playing a variety of guitars, keyboards, programing and even bringing in his voice along with Oliver Schnee for an opus that starts out spacious and misty, slowly building up into a world music dramatic climax of celebration. Ambitious but highly accessible all throughout.
