Pianist and singer Mitch Woods comes to the 2018 Jazz and Heritage Festival in New Orleans and gives the crowd a taste of it’s own medicine, giving homage to Fats Domino in a rousing set. He’s supported by the 8 to the Bar team of The Rocket 88s (Amadee Castenell/ts, Brian Cayolle/ts, Roger Lewis/bs, Cornell Williams/b, John Fohl/g, Terence Higgins/dr) and the comfort is southern here, with Woods serving up blue plate specials like “Jambalaya,” “Blue Monday”and “Walking To New Orleans.” He takes us up to Memphis for “Rocket 88” and does a fun calypso on “Mojo Mambo” with his hands in full fisted boogie mode and the saxes wailing for mercy. Woods does an excellent job reminding us of one of the members of rock’s Mount Rushmore.
