CREATIVE VOICES…Sivan Arbel: Change of Light, Fernanda Cunha: Canta Filo’ Machado, Quiana Lynell: A Little Love, Kevin Hays & Chiara Izzi: Across The Sea

Modern female ladies at the mic…

Sivan Arbel composes everything here and is backed by Shai  Portugaly/p, Pera Krstajic/b, Yogev Gabay/dr, Shai Wetzer/perc, Ron Warburg/tp, Jack Sheehan/as and Ori Jacobson/ts for these 7 compositions. Her voice is flexible, and is heartfelt when teamed with Portugaly on “Water Song” while getting bluesy for “Omri.” The horns go from elegiac on “Solitude” to dramatic on the intricate yet lyrical “Homesick” with her voice showing great range and depth during “Change.” Rich and original.

Brazilian Vocalist Fernanda Cunha mixes classic samba with modern pulses on this 8 song ep with Ze Carlos/v-g, Camilla Dias/p, Helbe Machado/dr, Berval Moraes/b and Reg Schwager/g. Her tone is earthy and husky, kinetic on the electric “Perfume De Cebola” and sensuas on the acoustic samba  “Rainha Da Note” and lovely during “Carmens E COnsuelos.” With classical guitar, she is folksy on “Pro Felipe” and sweet on the bossa “Jogral” with a delicious slink for “Boca De Leao.” Inviting!

Quiana Lynell debuts strongly on this collection of soul and standards. She’s backed by an all star team of Jamison Ross/dr, Cyrus Chestnut/p, Ed Cherry/g, George DeLancey/b and Monte Croft/vib. With guys like Ross and Chestnut, you’re bound to get some Sunday gospel pulses, and Lynell delivers on a gorgeous and rich “What Is Love?” and a waltzing pew buster on “Just a Little Lovin’.” Her enunciation is personal and intimate, almost reverent on a prayerful “Come Sunday/I Wish I Knew” and has fun with a funky “Tryin’ Times” and sassy “You Hit The Spot.” Lots of winning ways on this rookie session.

Chiara Izzi sings to the accompaniment of Kevin Hays/key-p, Rob Jost/b-frh, Greg Joseph/dr, Rogerio Boccato/perc, Chris Potter/ts-ss, Gregoire Maret/harm, Nir Felder/g and Omer Avital/oud on this eclectic mix of folk, bohemia and jazz. She does wonders with a personal read of Pat Metheny’s “James” teamed with Maret, and seamlessly enters the room after Hays’ intro to “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face.” Delicate and fragile moods are created on “Circles of the Mind” and exotic skies team with Avital’s oud for a mystical “Verso Il Mare.” Lots of arts and crafts.
