David Grier: Ways of the World

Any artist endorsed by Tommy Emmanuel deserves attention, and David Grier gets  both on this impressive acoustic album long on folksy bluegrass. His picking is confident and clean, rich on the hoe down rags like “Billy In The Low Ground” and tender on “Let’s Think Why,” especially when teaming with Casey Campbell/mand, Dennis Crouch/b, and Stuart Duncan for stomping tunes like “The Curmudgeon’s Gait” and “Waiting On Daddy’s Money.” Rod McGaha’s trumpet adds rich textures to the dreamy “Farewell to Redboots,” and vocals with Andrea Zoon on a casual title track is filled with back porch comfort. Fun dance steps are made for “She’s Gone” with vocals added by Shad Cobb and Mike Compton” with Maura O’Connell sounding homey for “She Came From The Mountains.” Lots of pickin’ and grinnin’ here for good times.
