Atomic Road Kings: Clean Up the Blood

A deep dish of Chicago blues is served up by vocalist/guitarist “Big” Jon Anderson and a gritty team of Eric VonHerzen/harp, Bill Stuve/b, Danny Michel/g, Tony Delgado/g, Scot Smart/g, Malachi Johnson/dr and guest Robert Welsh/p on this dozen blue tinged originals. The band delivers some ominous shuffles and wailing harp sounds for Atkinson’s earthy voice on material like “I’ve Got Time” the greasy “Have Your Way” and the shuffling “Candy Man.” Stuve delivers a hip bass line for the juke joint jumping “Back Down South” and the spoonful of “Rumors.” The stew brews slowly for “Ain’t For Me” and “Two Sided Story,” with the atmosphere getting so Old School that the whole session is recorded with analog tubes and is in living monaural. Recorded on to tape live and it’s alive!
