Ethan Ardelli: The Island of Form

Drummer Ethan Ardelli brings together a fluid team of Luiz Deniz/as, Chris Donnelly/p and Devon Henderson/b for a rich collection of originals. The overall sound is rich and spacious, leaving lots of room for Deniz’s warm Paul Desmond-toned horn, and it’s used well as he swings easy over Ardelli’s lilting  percussion on “Agua” and is gets loose on the conversant “Thanks For Something.” Henderson gives some nice pulsations on the bluesy “Accretion” while Donnelly brings some mist for Ardelli’s cymbals on the graceful “Les Calanques” and melodic “Dunraven.” Showing is alacrity in the spotlight for “5:55” the leader is suave on the brushes for a laconic “The Serpentine Path” and guides with subtlety throughout. Classy and clean.
