Conductor Alister Spence leads the highly productive pianist/composer Satoko Fujii as she continues to celebrate her 60th year with a concert at Big Apple Jazz Club in Kobe Japan. The 15 piece orchestra is light and flexible, able to create Gil Evans-like soft harmonies on the musical “(Postscript)” or getting intricate as the horns form a nifty line with Hiroshi Funato’s hip bass line on “(Here)”. A wild mix of New Orleans and rap chanting marches along for “(Meeting)”as well as a collection nof chirps and long tomes make for an eyebrow raising “”(You)” but even the wildest moments never lose steam and either build up to a climax or drift like the foam of an ebbing wave.
