For his last album, singer/songwriter John Kilzer (who passed away March 12) delivered material like he was raised on a breakfast of gravel on this rootsy collection of originals. He was teamed with a core group of Dave Smith/b, Rick Steff/p-key, Steve Selvidge/g, Matt Ross-Spang/g, Steve Potts-George Sluppick/dr and a handful of guests that create bluesy and stripped down rockish themes. While on a rocky road, his chord progression of “Flat Bed Truck” is hauntingly similar to Chicago’s “25 or 6 to 4” but he gave it a rural root. With piano, he could be laconic on “Time” and he knew how to tell a tale as on “Memphis Town.” A moody and churchified “Twinkle of Love” is rich in harmonics while easy beats are on the plate for “The American Blues” and “It.” A nice passenger for Highway 99, and his travelogues will be missed.
