Bob Holz featuring Mike Stern: Silverthrone

Last year, veteran drummer Bob Holz released a heartfelt tribute to his late boss Larry Coryell. This time around, he brings in a rotating team of guitarists, most notably Mike Stern, along with Jamie Glaser and Alex Machacek to complement the team of Andrew Ford-Ralphe Armstrong/b, Alex Acuna/perc, Billy Steinway/key, Brandon Fields-Ada Rovatti/sax and Randy Brecker on a soulful set of rhythmic originals.

Holz keeps the pockets deep on soulful and R&B based pieces like “Intervals” and “Subliminal Son” with a nice groove on “Vince” and hip CTI-styled bass line from which to work on ”Rip Tide.” Brecker joins in with Stern on a mellow and hip “The Point” with Stern and Holz creating a mysteriously spacey atmosphere on “Larry’s Blues.” The horns get funky with leader and Stern on “Silvertone” and some nice soul synth gets you dancing on “Less Is More,” a title which summarizes the rich economy of this enjoyable outing.
