In celebration of Satoko Fujii’s 60th birthday, pianist Yuko Yamaoka has put together on two discs a whopping 118 of her compositions. Obviously, what we’re exposed to are the simple themes and melodies, but the idea works well. The short pastiches go from reflection as on “102509” to gentle parlor thoughts as on “051305.” The pieces are concise, rich and well textured in Yamaoka’s hands. The albums create an informal atmosphere, more like playing for a cozy crowd around the piano than in a concert hall. Unassuming and unpretentious moments of clarity.
