Alto saxist Christopher Hollyday leads a swinging post bop quintet with Gilbert Castellanos/tp, Joshua White/p, Rob Thorsen/b and Tyler Kreutel/dr through a collection of standards. Hollyday’s tone and attack are similar to the bright approach of a Jackie McLean, on display with Castllanos sitting out and White giving luscious support on a bouncy “I’ve Got the World On a String” and velvety “Autumn in New York.” The horns lock in with a declaratory trumpet with a glistening take of the minor mooded “One of Another Kind” and are hiply muted for “Everything Happens to Me.” The rhythm team shows it’s sharp elbows on the kinetic “Hallucinations” and drives relentlessly for the staccato’d horns on Charlie Parker’s more obscure “Segment.” Flexed bebopping biceps.
