Camille Thurman is a two time winner here, blessed with a rich and cheery singing voice as well a warm old school tone on the tenor. She leads a team of Cecil McBee/b, Jack Wilkins/g, Steve Williams/dr and Jeremy Pelt/tp through a collection of standards and clever selections. Her tenor sax is Ben Webster foggy on a gorgeous “Some of These Days” and as rich as King Midas on the title track. With Pelt at the horn, she’s cheerful on the easy swinger singing to “I Just Found Out About Love,” intimate and coy with Wilkins and McBee during “The Nearness of You” and “I’m On Your Side” and gliding with Williams’ brushes for a bouncy “Easy to Love.” Girl next door charm with the heart of a jazzer.
