Joe Locke: Subtle Disguise

One of the most consistent vibe players around, Joe Locke puts together a rich and pastoral album as he also adds piano to his arsenal along with members Jim Ridl/p-key, Lorin Cohen/b, Samvel Sarkisyan/dr and guests Raul Midon/v-g, Adam Rogers/g, David Binney/as and Alina Engibaryan/voc. Rogers and Binney both join in on the lovely lyrical and pulsating “Red Cloud” and the angular post bopping “Blondie Roundabout” with Binney dropping out as Rogers rocks out on “Motherless Children” and caresses the strings along with Locke’s vibes on the soft “Subtle Disguise.” The band gets kinetic on the bouncy “Who Killed Davey Moore” and with Engibaryan’s vice “A Little More Each Day” has an indie feel to it. All within the jazz mood, but with rich impressionistic brush strokes.
