John Moulder brings electric, nylon and acoustic guitars to the front of his band with Gwilym Simcock/p, Tim Garland/ss, bcl, Steve Rodby/b, Paul Wertico/dr and Ernie Adams/perc on this collection of originals. His electric strings get rocky as they pierce through Wertico’s gallop along with Garland’s soprano on the first part of “Memoirs of the Sea” while the acoustic strings cantor with percussion on the second. His nylon strings are lyrical with Simcock on a folksy “One Last call” and float with reflection on the serene “About Us.” Garlands bass clarinet brings a rich texture to the strings on a lovely “Retreat Into Autumn” while his soprano floats with Rodby on a flowing “African Sunset.” The moods are richly pastoral, and make for wonderful pastel portraits.
