You probably will recognize the face of this guy from Sex and the City and from My Big Fat Greek Wedding. Never watched the former, but loved him as “Ian Meeeeeler” on the latter. He’s done a country album before, and he actually sounds pretty comfortable in that genre. His voice here, on a session produced by Jon Randall Stewart and Gary Paczosa, he focuses on music written with a heart of Texas, as most of the tunes are composed by gents from the Lone Star State. As with most songs of this style, there’s lots of storytelling going on. Some of the deeper ones are about reflections on his departed father, on “Name on a Stone,” as well as the usual fight between choosing God and the Devil (“Cocaine and Communion” and “Backside of a Backslide”). Other songs about the simple side of life round out an impressive disc. And no bouzouki!
