The allure of Trygve Seim is that he takes the breathy legato of founder Lester Young, and takes it to its logical conclusion on both tenor and soprano sax. Case in point is this deliciously icy and delicate alvum with Kristjan Randalu/p, Mats Eilertsen/b and Markku Ounaskari/dr, where you may not get the Kansas City swing pulse that Pres embodied, but Seim and company replaces it with a Nordic folk spaciousness that serves as just as a suitable environ.
Seim’s tenor sighs on the frosty and spacious “Birthday Song” while he hovers like a cloud and makes like a shofar whle Randalu rumbles on “New Beginning.” Both sigh and breath out visible air from the sub 32 “Morning Song” and Seim gasps to the dancing bass during the pretty “Randalusian Folk Song.” The rhythm team gets frisky for “Yes Both Please” and create a gentle cadence for the rich title track. The tone is palpable and textured here, making for three dimensional listening.
